Where can I get a HART modem?

Well, that depends on what you mean by "a HART modem" ...

HART modem integrated circuits
These are what you need to embed in a HART-speaking field device or host, if you are designing from scratch. They operate at extremely low power, so can be used within two-wire 4-to-20mA loop-powered instruments.
Symbios Logic SYM20C12 and SYM20C15These were originally the NCR 20C12 and 20C15. The 20C15 is a newer design and includes much more and better circuitry for filtering, carrier detection and waveform shaping. Symbios has recently been acquired by LSI Logic Corporation. Initially, LSI planned to make these devices obsolete. However, in the face of continuing demand, they now plan to keep the 20C15 in production, for at least 2 years. Supplies have been short, but more should be available from a new fabrication plant (in October 1999). Texas Instruments TCM3105 and AMD AM7910These are now obsolete. They were general-purpose communication modems operating with Bell 202, but not specifically-designed for HART. Their power consumption was too high to be used in a two-wire loop-powered field instrument. |
RS-232 to HART converters
These provide a convenient interface for HART host devices which already have a conventional RS-232 serial port (such as a PC). Typically, the converter has a 9- or 25-pin D type connector for the RS-232 side, and some form of terminals for the HART side. Usually, power for the converter can be taken automatically from the host's RS-232 port.
Hosts having only an RS-422 or RS-485 port will need an additional converter to RS-232. (Unfortunately, no direct converter sems to be available from these signals to HART.) Note the requirement to generate an RTS signal at the RS-232 interface (see below).
Because HART is a half-duplex protocol, the HART transmission from the host has to be switched off to listen for a reply from the field device. The converters listed provide this function via the RS-232 RTS control line. Host software must control this line correctly for the system to work. (This is nothing new - many RS-232 to RS-485 converters work in the same way, for the same reason.)
If you need to connect to more than one HART loop, consider using a HART multiplexer, containing one or more HART modems and also switching between multiple HART networks.

USB to HART converters
This update to the RS-232 serial port devices above, provides an interface for HART host devices (such as a PC) using a USB port. Power for the converter can be taken automatically from the host's USB port.
A "virtual serial port" software driver makes the USB port appear to Windows programs as a conventional COM port. The notes on RS-232 applications above may also apply.

PC HART interface cards
These provide a combined serial port and HART modem, built as a PC card. For programming, they appear identical to a standard PC serial port. Remember, host software must use RTS to control signal direction (see above), even though it does not appear externally.
