SerPort-functionality of HARTcommunicator 275?

I've got a HARTcommunicator 275 on my desk and i am wondering if I can use its serial port without having to buy Emersons AMS software package.
Does anyone know whether the port is just the pc-side of a HART-modem or if there is a special set of commands needed to operate it.
