Maybe you misunderstand the use of DDL? The DD you write for a field device goes into the host, not the field device itself. So, how to get a new DD into the host is something you would have to ask the particular host system supplier.
Sorry, I don't have any idea how this is typically done, but for example I see that for Emerson's 375 and 475: 'DDs and System Software cannot be loaded directly into the 475 or 375. The Easy Upgrade Utility must be used to update your communicator.' See ftp://ftp.emersonprocess.com/AO/downloads/RecentDDs/RecentDDs.pdf.
Remember, the DD describes how the field device appears, to the host - it doesn't form the programming of the field device itself.
